SEA GAMES 2011: LAOS HOLD TEN MAN BRUNEI

SEA GAMES 2011: LAOS HOLD TEN MAN BRUNEI

SEA GAMES 2011: LAOS HOLD TEN MAN BRUNEI
LEBAK BULUS (7 Nov 2011) – Laos seem to find it difficult to play against teams with ten men and tonight, they were lucky not to concede a second loss in the competition when they held Brunei to a 2-2 draw at the Lebak Bulus Stadium.
On the first match day of Group B the Laotians, the 2009 semi-finalists failed to take advantage of Myanmar playing with ten men, when they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat.
And tonight, Brunei’s hopes of picking up their first win was stuttered as early as the 15thminute when defender Reduan Petara was red carded by Indonesian referee Oki Putra for a foul on Laos captain Lamnao Singto.

SEA GAMES 2011: BRUNEI NEED TO POLISH GAME; LAOS AIM FOR THE REBOUND

JAKARTA (7 Nov 2011) – Brunei will need to polish up their game if they are serious about making the next round while for Laos, they will have to rebound from the loss they suffered from their first match to Myanmar.
Brunei might have lost their first game in the group, but they showed that despite being out of it for a decade – their last participation in SEA Games football was back in 2001 – and also the ban by FIFA in the last two years, they still know how to play football.

Thailand face uphill task to reclaim title

(BANGKOK POST)

In their final group game in Vientiane, eight-time defending champions Thailand only needed to avoid defeat against Malaysia to progress.
They seemed to have secured a semi-final spot when they were leading 1-0 with a few minutes to go. Then lightning struck as Malaysia scored twice in the dying moments to schock the Thais.
And Thailand's bid to reclaim the title will not be easy as they are in Group of Death with hosts Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia.
Group B is considered much weaker with Vietnam and Burma favourites to advance against the Philippines, Laos, Brunei and East Timor.
The top two teams from each group progress to the semi-finals.
The draw upset Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Worawi Makudi who said: "I don't know which system they used for the draw. Normally, the hosts and the defending champions should be in separate groups."
While Kasem Jariyawatwong, the SEA Games football team manager, said it was a tough group, he looked on the bright side.
"It is good to be in a difficult group because this will be a good test for us," he said. "If we get past the first round, we will have a good chance of winning the gold medal."
While Thailand are in a tough group, critics and concerned parties - including Worawi - agree that the Thais have only one choice and anything less than the title will be unacceptable.
"We aim to win the gold medal and anything less will be deemed a failure," Worawi said.
"In the previous SEA Games, we underestimated our opponents quite a lot. We thought that no one could beat us but that attitude led to us being eliminated in the first round. That was a big lesson so we will not underestimate any side this time."
The team will be boosted by a 10 million baht bonus - six million baht from the FAT sponsors and four million baht from the government - if the team go all the way in Indonesia.
But the team's preparation has been hit by some problems.
Striker Teerasil Dangda and goalkeeper Kawin Thammasatchanant, both of Muang Thong United, are eligible for the SEA Games football tournament which is an under-23 competition. However, Teerasil is injured while Kawin is in the full national team.
The SEA Games team bosses have successfully added defender Teerathorn Boonmathon to their squad but Teerathorn is in Thailand's full national side which will travel to Saudi Arabia on Nov 11 and host Australia on Nov 15 in World Cup qualifiers.
This means he will be available for the SEA Games in Thailand's final group game against Singapore on Nov 17.
Kasem had complained that Teerathorn should not be in the full national squad because it was not likely that he would be used.
The SEA Games side have been forced to train in Phuket because of the flooding situation in Bangkok.
The team are coached by Prapol Pongpanich and his assistant Vitoon Kitmongkolsak who were both hand-picked by Kasem - probably for superstitious reason.
Thailand won gold at the 1997 SEA Games after beating Indonesia on their home soil in a penalty shoot-out in the final with Kasem being manager, Propol coach and Vitoon a key player.

Vietnam Blast PHL in football opener

The Philippine Azkals under-23 team yesterday was on the cusp of duplicating the achievement of their senior counterparts last year, but a costly mistake by their team captain frustrated their attempt.
Despite leading 1-0 in the first half via a Manny Ott strike, the younger Azkals succumbed to a hot offensive game by reigning silver medalist Vietnam, 1-3, to open its campaign in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Ott opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a strike off a pass from Joshua Beloya. However, captain Matthew James Hartmann committed an error with a header on the Philippines' on goal. This sparked the Vietnamese hot offensive streak, keeping possession 71 percent of the game with ten shots at goal, according to the Manila Bulletin.
Vietnam's Le Huang Then scored the go-ahead goal off a save from goalkeeper Roland Muller of his first shot. Nguyen Van Quyet scored again in the 92nd minute to stamp Vietnam's win.
The game could have been a blowout for Vietnam if not for Muller, who, according to ABS-CBN News, saved a number of Vietnam's attempts to score a goal.
"Many of our players had suffered from jet lag and I think that was evident in the way they played but we have a total of four games so we would like to take it day by day. We will get this game behind us,” Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss said on the Philippine Olympic Committee Online.
In December 2010, the Azkals blasted Vietnam, 2-0, in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Football Federation Suzuki Cup, which sparked the renewal of Philippine football.
Myanmar (Burma) defeated Laos, 3-2, in yesterday's other match. The SEA Games will formally open on November 11.
