Football: Singapore defeat Laos 4-0 in friendly match

SINGAPORE: The Singapore National team is gearing up to win a fourth Asean Football Federation (AFF) Cup title which kicks off next month.

And to tune up for the big event, the Lions took on Laos in a friendly at the Jurong West stadium coming out with a 4-0 win.

Singapore does not have much time to prepare for the AFF Suzuki Cup, so this match is critical for the coach to pick his final squad for the tournament.

The hosts did not disappoint, Noh Alam Shah finding the back of the net in the last minute of the first half.

And they went on to score three more goals in the second half to clinch a 4-0 victory.

Laos was ranking in 178 of the world in 2009 according the FIFA world ranking on December 2009. after the Laos had a great performance during the seagames2009, Laos earns more points and the ranking reduces to 171 of the world while Cambodia is ranking ahead of Laos (170). however , the suzuki cup 2010 will give Laos the credit and more pts for the world ranking if Laos will be winning of the group or qualified to the semifal or final.

Mr soulivan senvilay told the vientianemai that, after Laos won the qualifying rounds, Lao squad are training very hard to play the final round of suzuki cup 2010 in Indonesia. Laos will play the warm up match in overseas before heading to Indonesia according the Seceraty of Lao football federation Mr soulivan added.

Laos get a deserved rest

VIENTIANE: With their place secured in the group stage of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, Laos coach David Booth has given his players some time off before they begin their preparations for December's group stage. 

The Laotians booked their spot in Group A alongside Thailand, Malaysia and hosts Indonesia after thrashing Timor Leste 6-1 on Tuesday to finish first in the qualifying competition at the National Sports Complex in Vientiane. 

It was the successful culmination of three months of hard work by the team, for which Booth felt that his players were fully deserving of some downtime. 

"We've give them a few days holiday," said the veteran English coach. "They've been working hard for the last three months so they deserve to take a break. 

"We will talk about the group stage more when we get back together for training." 

Laos have now topped the qualifiers in three consecutive editions of the Suzuki Cup. But Booth feels that it will matter little if they do not show a marked improvement in the group stage of the tournament. 

The Laotians have never beaten any of their Group A opponents in the Asean championship. And they have lost all of their games in the last two tournaments in 2007 and 2008, conceding an alarming 36 goals in only six games. 

While Booth is not expecting a miracle turnaround of fortunes for his side in Jakarta, he is hoping for them to show some improvement against the region's bigger teams. 

"We need to play against better teams and see what standard we're coming up to," said the 62-year-old, who took charge of the Laotians earlier this year. 

"We have the talent and we're trying to get them to work harder. Hopefully we can put some good games together there. 

"We want to be competitive in time to come so it's important now not to go backwards." 

Such is the positive attitude in the Laos camp that Booth is confident that he will continue to see improvement by his charges in the group stage. 

"I've been in charge for nearly for nearly three months and what has impressed me the most in that time is not individual players but the team spirit and hard-working attitude. They work the way that we want them to work and they work very hard at trying to do things correctly. 

"Timor Leste may not be the best of teams but to score six goals against any team is very good. We were also very unlucky not to beat Philippines and Cambodia during the qualifiers.

LAOS EMERGE CHAMPS AND CLAIM FINAL ROUND BERTH WITH PHILIPPINES

VIENTIANE (26 Oct 2010) – Hosts Laos emerged the champions of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 qualifying rounds for the second time in succession after sensationally beating Timor Leste 6-1 at the National Sports Complex tonight. Philippines, who finished second on an inferior goal difference, have claimed the other slot after earlier sharing points with Cambodia in an earlier tie. Laos will join a difficult Group A where they will have Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand for company while the Philippines will battle it out with defending champions Vietnam, Singapore and Myanmar in Group B. Cambodia, second in the previous qualifying tournament two years ago, finished third with five points, similar to Laos and the Philippines, but lost out on an inferior goal difference. For Laos the victory was sweet as they came from behind to secure a sensational victory. Down by an early goal, Laos battled back to score six goals to dispose of Timor Leste who completed the tournament without any points. “We expected to win this game but it is not easy knowing that we have to win by a certain number of goals to take the Cup,” said David Booth, the chief coach of Laos. “For me, it does not matter which group we are in for the final round – they are all hard teams to play against.” Bottom-placed Timor Leste stunned the hosts just nine minutes into the game. The goal was a severe blow for Laos who knew they needed at least three goals in order to qualify for the final rounds. Laos, to their credit, got their act together very quickly and were back on level terms just two minutes later thanks to a fine strike from Kovanh Namthaxivay. Laos continued to pile the pressure and surged ahead in the 17th minute, this time after Soukaphone Vongchiengkham’s header whizzed past the on-rushing Timor keeper. Laos were unfortunate not to pick up at least two more goals by the end of the first half. Kovanh rocked the crossbar in the 28th minute while Soukaphone’s shot was just inches from the target. Timor stole away in the dying minutes when Chiquitto Do Carmo split the defence but his shot landed in the arms of the keeper. Just before the hour mark, Laos had added two more goals through Lamnao Singto and Konekham Inthammavong in the 47th and 59th minutes. The importance of the fourth goal was the fact that Laos had done enough to qualify as the second placed team. This pushed Cambodia down into third spot and effectively out of the finals. Anyone who thought Laos would be satisfied as the second placed team were wrong as they went on to score two more goals through Kanyala Sysomvang and Ketsada Souksavanh for a magnificent 6-1 win. This meant Laos had swept past the Philippines on better goal difference. Laos had scored eight goals while Philippines had scored seven. The top three, Laos, Philippines and Cambodia all have five points each. “We had minimum preparation but we still managed to match the other teams in certain aspects although we lost out physically.
