Asean Super League approved for launch in 2015

The long-rumoured regional super league looks set to go into action in two years time with 16 participating teams
Speaking at a press conference before the start of the inaugural AFF Awards 2013, Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Tengku Abdullah ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah, the deputy president of the Football Association of Malaysia and vice-president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee, had two big news to announce.

Tengku Adullah broke the news on the status of the long standing rumours of an Asean Super League by confirming the approval of the league's launch for 2015.

"We would like to highlight that we have approved the launch of an Asean Super League in 2015 featuring two clubs from each country," said Tengku Abdullah to surprised journalists attending the Awards ceremony.

"The competition will be based on a franchise concept and ideally, 16 teams [will participate in the league]. Each team will be allowed two Asian players plus 3 non-Asian players."

The Asean Super League was first broached 3 years ago as a viable option to compete with the bigger leagues in Asia but developments had been cloaked in secrecy until now.

The 16 representative teams are believed to come from eight leagues in the Asean region, namely, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar.
