Indonesia accepts FIFA ban on national coach

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -Indonesia coach Aji Santoso has been banned for four games and fined by FIFA for accusing match officials of taking bribes during a 10-0 loss to Bahrain in World Cup qualifying.
The Indonesian Football Association and Santoso said on Wednesday they accepted the punishments but didn't rule out an appeal. Santoso, now coaching the national under-23 side, was fined $6,530.
Santoso was red-carded by Lebanese referee Andre Al Haddad in the 75th minute of February's match in Manama following allegations he accused Al Haddad of being bribed.
FIFA said Santoso told the officials "(there is) money involved (here).''
In the second minute, Al Haddad sent off Indonesia's goalkeeper and awarded four penalties to Bahrain, which needed to make up a nine-goal deficit on Qatar to have a chance of advancing to the next round. However, Qatar drew 2-2 with Iran, and those two advanced.
FIFA called the outcome "unusual'' and launched an investigation.
Indonesia was warned by FIFA before the match to send its strongest team, but an inexperienced team was selected after Indonesia suspended players from clubs in the breakaway Indonesian Super League.
Edi Ellison, the spokesman for the Indonesian association, said they will wait to decide on an appeal after the result of FIFA's probe.
Because of the loss to Bahrain and the breakaway league, the government was planning to cut funding to the association.

Football: Malaysia to host Manchester City in July

MALAYSIA - English Premier League title contenders Manchester City will play a friendly match against a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur in July, promoters of the event said on Wednesday.

It will be City's first fixture in Malaysia when they play at the 90,000 capacity Bukit Jalil Stadium on July 30.

"We are very honoured to be hosting Manchester City, as we are the only Southeast Asian country given this opportunity,"Football Association of Malaysia deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said in a statement.

The big-spending side are the second English team to commit to a fixture in Malaysia after Arsenal announced plans earlier this month.

A third Premier League team is widely expected to also play in Kuala Lumpur, where Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool drew 80,000 attendances for fixtures against a Malaysia XI last year.

FA Cup holders Manchester City and Arsenal will also play against each other at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium on July 27, the same day as the Olympic Games opening ceremony in London.

The tour is the first in Asia by City, who played pre-season fixtures in the United States last year, since Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan bought the club and ploughed in millions to transform their fortunes.

While this season they have showed they are capable of challenging neighbours Manchester United on the field they will struggle to match the support their rivals command in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, where the Premier League champions and Liverpool dominate.

Terry apologises over red card shame

Football: Terry apologises over red card shame
Posted: 25 April 2012 0708 hrs

BARCELONA: Chelsea captain John Terry apologised for his red card moment of madness against Barcelona on Tuesday that will rule him out of next month's Champions League final.

The Chelsea icon was given his marching orders on 37 minutes of an epic encounter at the Camp Nou which saw the Premier League side fight back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and clinch a 3-2 aggregate win over the Catalans.

Terry's dismissal for a foul on Alexis Sanchez threatened to trigger a drubbing for Chelsea, who conceded a second goal to Andres Iniesta soon afterwards following Sergio Busquets' opening strike.

However the veteran defender watched from the bench as goals from Ramires and Fernando Torres sealed a remarkable comeback.

Former England captain Terry admitted however that the result was bittersweet as he will be denied the opportunity to lead Chelsea in Munich.

"Sanchez was darting in behind me. I've seen the replay and it does look bad," Terry told Sky Sports.

"I'm not that type of player to intentionally hurt anyone. I've raised my knee, which I maybe shouldn't have done in hindsight. But hopefully people who know me as a person, as a player... I'm not that type of player.

"I'm disappointed but delighted for the lads. To come here and play the way they did and get the result they did with 10 men... I feel I've let them down. I've apologised to them and I want to apologise to the fans as well.

"At the time, I was bewildered because I was trying to protect myself a little bit, but looking at it on the replay, I've no complaints. I've let the lads down. They've performed brilliantly, so hopefully this doesn't take it away from the players."

Terry, desperate to atone for the penalty shoot-out miss which cost Chelsea victory in the 2008 final over Manchester United, agreed it would hurt to miss the final.

"On a personal note, of course," he said.

"But this is what this football club deserves. We deserve to be in the Champions League final. The boys were excellent and I hope the incident doesn't take away from how hard they worked."

Chelsea's interim manager Roberto Di Matteo refused to attach any blame to his captain.

"He's a fantastic leader of this group. He's the captain of our club. Everybody can make a mistake in life. We're just so happy that this group has managed to go to the final," he said.

"We're all human beings. We're under a lot of pressure as players."

Di Matteo meanwhile hailed Chelsea's "incredible achievement" in reaching the final after a tumultuous season.

"A lot of people had written us off and we showed again what kind of character these players have," Di Matteo said.

"We didn't expect to play with 10 men and we knew it was going to be tough. It was even more difficult than we expected.

"They're a great team, with some fantastic players. We just showed what we're made of."

AFF FUTSAL 2012: Thais top group to set-up semis showdown with Malaysia, Vietnam will battle Indonesia

AFF FUTSAL 2012: Thais top group to set-up semis showdown with Malaysia, Vietnam will battle Indonesia

APRIL 23, 2012

BANGKOK (23 April 2012) – After breezing through their first three matches and scoring a whopping 67 goals, Thailand faced their toughest opponents today in the form of a young and spirited Indonesian side.

Thailand claimed victory today but it did not come easy as Indonesia battled them all the way and restricted them to a 6-1 win at the Bangkok Thonburi Stadium this evening.

“This is the type of game I wanted. The first few matches were too easy, the players learn nothing,” said Victor Hermans, the chief coach of Thailand.

Thailand, seven-time AFF Futsal champions, have thus completed their fixtures with maximum points and are the Group B winners. The hosts will now face Malaysia, runners-up in the other group, in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Indonesia will take on Group A champions Vietnam in the other semis battle.

Thailand had a good start as nippy striker Kritsada Wongkaeo snatched possession away from a defender and rammed his team ahead. If the crowd was expecting the goals to flow in as in previous games, they were wrong as the Indonesians held their ground.

Skipper Randhyas Syamsul Bahri did a fine job marshalling his team but the skilful playmaker could only do so much against the massive Thai onslaught.

In the sixth minute, there was a bit of a scramble in front of goal and Apiwat Chaemcharoen somehow managed to flick it in. And then in the 10th minute, star player Suphawut Thueanklang, who usually has a knack for scoring early goals, finally got his name on the scoresheet. It was a brilliant goal as he latched on to a corner kick at the top of
the box and first-timed his shot in.

AFF FUTSAL 2012: Another double-digit win for Thais, Vietnam beat Myanmar
BANGKOK (21 April 2012) – Thailand, the seven-times AFF Futsal champions, showed their awesome form by completing a second successive double-digit victory at the Bangkok Thonburi Stadium this afternoon. Their latest victims were Laos who suffered a 26-2 loss today.
Thailand, who demolished Brunei 22-0 yesterday, are top of Group B with six points and virtually through to the semifinals. Once again, the attention was on star playmaker Suphawut Thuean, who did not disappoint the fans. It took the skilful player just 21 seconds to score the opening goal.

Football: Pakistan lose opener in Thailand

Published: April 18, 2012
According to the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) official, the team conceded two goals in the first half while Thailand sealed the victory with their third.
KARACHI:
Pakistan’s under-22 football team failed to make any impact in Thailand as they lost their opening match 3-0 in Bangkok.
According to the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) official, the team conceded two goals in the first half while Thailand sealed the victory with their third.
“I’m hoping that the players improve,” PFF Secretary Ahmed Yar Khan Lodhi told The Express Tribune.
“The aim of the tour is to give them exposure and confidence because they don’t perform well in international tournaments. Winning and losing doesn’t matter since these are friendly matches and won’t affect our international ranking.”

Cambodia in the fray at AFF futsal tournament

The Cambodian national futsal team, including five officials and 14 players, flew to Bangkok yesterday afternoon ahead of participation in the 10-nation 2012 AFF Futsal Championship, which gets underway tomorrow.

Head coach Hok Sotitya told the Post before heading to the airport yesterday that his players have been selected from futsal clubs competing in the annual national championships and tournaments and had been training for the past month-and-a-half.

They had also played friendlies against other local sides to gain familiarity as a team.

“In recent friendly games, our most impressive win was 29-0 but this result is not comparable to what we face in the upcoming campaign. They [the Cambodian national team players] have never played in international games, let alone on foreign soil, so their confidence is not good,” he said.

“Their energy and technique is acceptable but they suffer from nerves when playing in front of large crowds which can alter their playing style. We have already seen this aspect when they played in the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship in Thailand.”

Since 2001, Thailand have dominated, claiming the title seven times while Indonesia have won it once. Cambodia have made two appearances and finished fourth on both occasions.

In 2003, Cambodia were obliterated 29-0 by Indonesia in the third place playoff, although Cambodia’s Chan Veasna registered the second highest goal count of the competition with 12 goals.

In 2006, Cambodia side were beaten 10-2 by Myanmar at the same stage.

Thailand also triumphed 3-1 over Indonesia in the final of the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship qualification tournament held in Bangkok in February.

Cambodia had lost all of their group games and failed to advance to the knockout rounds.

The upcoming eight-day event organised by regional football governing body the ASEAN Football Federation, sees Cambodian drawn in Group A with Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, and Myanmar, while Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Timor Leste and Brunei comprise Group B.

In opening day match-ups tomorrow at the Krungthep Thonburi Indoor Stadium, Cambodia will face Malaysia while Myanmar meet Philippines.

In Group B, Timor Leste have a tough game against Indonesia while Laos clash with Brunei.
